I do not know if ‘Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children’ ( ‘Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children’) is the film that returns us to the best Burton, but there is something in this adaptation of the novel by Ransom Riggs that conveys some confidence as it could be. The next September 30th will leave doubts, since that is the date that Fox has chosen for release in the United States and Spain.
A horrible family tragedy leaves Jacob, 16, traveling along the coast of Wales, where he discovers the ruins of the home for children of Miss Peregrine peculiar. As Jacob explores the abandoned rooms and corridors, he realizes that children who lived there (one of whom was his own grandfather) Eva Green, Asa Butterfield, Chris O’Dowd, Allison Janney, Rupert Everett, Terence Stamp, Ella Purnell, Judi Dench and Samuel L. Jackson. was something out of the ordinary. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason. And, somehow, (impossible, apparently) may be still alive.
Born in the United States in 1958, Tim Burton began his career in the world of animation from the hand of Disney, but its proposals were never part of titles like ‘Tod and Toby’ ( ‘The Fox and the Hound’) or ‘Taron and the magical kettle’ ( ‘the Black cauldron’). However, he had the opportunity to debut as a director with the short film ‘Vincent’ in 1982.
After a few more jobs, he makes debut in the film just three years later with ‘The Big Adventure Pee-wee’ ( ‘Pee-wee’s Big Adventure’), a notable blockbuster that allowed him to start showing more of himself in ‘Beetlejuice’ ( ‘Beetlejuice’). Warner then his eye on it to deal with ‘Batman’, a bombshell of such caliber that received little more than a blank check to the wonderful ‘Edward Scissorhands’ ( ‘Edward Scissorhands’).
After that, Burton returned with the bat man before suffering his first economic pricked with the notable ‘Ed Wood’. Nor was he was too well with ‘Mars attcks’ but soon recovered thanks to’ Sleepy Hollow ‘a loose remake of “Planet of the Apes’ (‘ Planet of the Apes’), achieving just after his best film so far this century ‘Big Fish’.
After that came a stage where he enjoyed the esteem of the public with proposals very much in line but in which there was always something that did not quite fit like ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ ( ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’), ‘corpse bride’ ( ‘the corpse bride’) or ‘Sweeney Todd’, but it was with his ‘Alice in Wonderland’ ( ‘Alice in Wonderland’) when it bottomed artistically speaking. Interestingly it is also the highest-grossing film he has done.
Since then he has been somewhat adrift with titles like discrete ‘Dark Shadows’ ( ‘Dark Shadows’) or estimable long version of ‘Frankenweenie’, also without forgetting the curious ‘Big Eyes’. None of them catastrophic, but neither lived up to the brilliance he showed in his time.
